From Digital music composition
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is the industry standard protocol for digitally representing musical compositions.
[edit] Messages
A MIDI Message is a string of bytes, starting with a control byte. Control bytes are the only bytes in MIDI allowed to be above decimal value 128 (hex 0x80). A few MIDI messages, called System Realtime Messages, can be inserted into the middle of other messages. These messages always consist of a single byte.
